Johnson enjoys working with patients and problem-solving. He has a particular interest in patient-centred and multimodal care.

Johnson has 30 years of experience in the field of physiotherapy.

He completed the BSc in Physiotherapy at Trinity College Dublin from 1989 to 1993. He worked in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dublin, before emigrating to the US in 1993.

​

He spent fours years in the US working in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services in Florida and New York. He completed his State Boards by successful first-time examination in Florida in 1993 and achieved automatic transfer to New York.

​

On returning to Ireland in 1997, He worked for three years in private practice in Limerick and Tipperary, He opened United Physiotherapy Clinic in 2000.

​

He worked with the National Coach and Training Centre servicing athletes from 2000, He was lead physiotherapist for 14 years with Irish Boxing High-Performance Team form 2003 to 2017. He led the physiotherapy services for four Olympic cycles.

 

He was an accredited physiotherapist for the Irish Olympic Team at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

He completed an MSc (Sports Physiotherapy) in 2004 at University College Dublin and Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of St Augustine, Florida, in 2008. 

​

Johnson has a particular interest in myofascial pain and dysfunction. He had two mentorships with David G Simons MD in 2005 and 2008. He edited and updated several chapters of the new edition of Travell & Simon's Trigger Point Manual (3rd Edition) 2018. He was the first Chartered Physiotherapist in Ireland to offer trigger point dry needling.

Johnson also has a keen interest in shockwave therapy,

United Physiotherapy Clinic in 2008 was the first physiotherapy clinic in the Republic of Ireland to offer musculoskeletal shockwave. Our clinic has the longest experience of shockwave delivery in Ireland.

Johnson also introduced shockwave therapy to Irish Boxing High-Performance Team in 2010 with a grant from the Irish Sports Council.

Johnson began teaching in 2003 and has taught over 200 courses and conference presentations in Ireland, UK, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the USA. Johnson teaches courses on myofascial trigger point pain, dry needling. management of low back pain, safety in dry needling therapies and whiplash related neck pain.

​

He has taught on several university programmes at UCD, DCU, UL and UCC. He taught an injury module for the BSc (Sports & Exercise Science) at the University of Limerick for six years.

​

He has authored many publications and book chapters.

He was co-author of the first trigger point dry needling adverse event study in 2014 and also was project manager for the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists Dry Needling Guidelines 2012.
