SURFACE EMG (sEMG)
A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Tool in the Management of Musculoskeletal Disorders

Program overview
This two-day workshop is designed to present the use of surface electromyography (sEMG) to the diagnosis and management of pain problems that originate from muscles. The introduction will cover the relation between the sEMG and the motor system and its relation with muscle properties as muscle-force, co-ordination, ability to relax, muscle endurance and muscle lengthening. Special emphasis will be placed on muscular dysfunction arising from myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). Emphasis will be placed on the identification and management of patients with headache, cranio-mandibular disorders, neck pain, impingement syndrome, work related disorders etc. After this training program the course-member will be able to use sEMG to reveal and diminish perpetuating factors of the myofascial pain syndrome that are caused by motor behaviour abnormalities in pain patients. The course will cover sEMG as a therapeutic tool to assist in stretching, relaxing and improvement of muscular coordination. Knowledge of functional anatomy and myofascial trigger points and referred pain patterns is required prior to attending this course.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Discriminate sEMG artifacts derived from a muscle
2. Recognize normal motor behaviour by identification of five muscle properties
3. Recognize by sEMG measurement, increased responsiveness, delayed relaxation and increased fatigability in muscles that harbour MTrPs
4. Track the muscles that are responsible for the pain complaints by means of recognizing the referred pain patterns
5. Perform a myofeedback-training to diminish or eliminate disturbed motor behavior

Carel Bron PT*
Carel Bron, PT MT, Private practice for physical therapy for neck, shoulder and arm disorders Groningen, The Netherlands. Special interests: Myofascial pain syndrome and the subacromial impingement syndrome, Whiplash associated disorders and repetitive strain injuries. He is working on his PhD thesis about myofascial trigger points and subacromial impingement syndrome. He is instructor at several courses about myofascial pain syndrome in the Netherlands.
