Course Information Leaflet

Overview
A four day (28 hour) course based on recent research into the diagnostic power of a comprehensive history and physical examination. Based on data that formed the basis of Mark Laslett’s doctoral research, the course presents a comprehensive system for patho-anatomic diagnosis of the tissue source of pain and the role this has in patient classification and management.
Evidence based clinical diagnosis of discogenic, facet and SI pain, nerve root pain, spinal stenosis is covered in detail, as is appropriate management strategies. The role of exercise, manipulative therapies, stabilization training, medication and invasive interventions are reviewed in detail. Workshops on diagnostic and treatment methods are included. Real patient demonstrations help to illustrate the practical and theoretical aspects of this evidence based approach to diagnosis and treatment of lumbopelvic
pain.

Course description
Over four days of lectures, practical workshops and patient demonstrations a new diagnostic and classification system is presented for painful lumbopelvic musculoskeletal conditions. The system has been developed by Mark Laslett and Paula van Wijmen over 30 years of clinical practice and 15 years of international teaching. Mark Laslett’s doctoral research has prompted a new approach to orthopedics, biomechanics, manual therapies, exercise methods and pain management as it relates to spinal
disorders. During the course, the strengths and limitations of traditional orthopedics, manual therapies, stabilization training and the McKenzie approach are discussed. Non-responders and cases difficult to classify are more easily identified and managed using the new system. Pain of disc, sacroiliac joint, nerve root, spinal stenosis and hip joint origin can now be identified with a known degree of confidence. Diagnosis of facet joint pain remains a problem and is discussed in detail. The different causes of referred pain into the lower limb can be identified leading directly to appropriate treatment options. Clinical reasoning process is guided by diagnostic algorithms that are straightforward and of immediate value to clinicians.
Essentials of the system have been published in recent peer reviewed journals that will be available to each applicant.

The instructor
Mark Laslett is a registered physiotherapist in New Zealand and holds post-graduate diplomas
in Manipulative Therapy and in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. He has been in continuous
private practice from 1971 to 2001 until commencing fulltime doctoral studies at the University
of Linköping, Sweden. He completed his PhD studies in May 2005 and returned to clinical
practice while continuing to engage in research. In 1979 he commenced teaching manipulative
therapy, and is a past president and former senior instructor for the New Zealand Manipulative
Physiotherapists Association. He was a senior international instructor in Mechanical Diagnosis
and Therapy between 1985 and 1997. Mark commenced clinical research in the late 1980’s and
has published a number of research and clinical papers since then. He has provided a chapter on diagnosis of sacroiliac joint pain in recent texts, and self-published "Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy: The Upper Limb" in 1996. Mark has presented his courses on the upper limb, the lower limb, and the lumbar spine and pelvis in New Zealand, Australia, USA, UK, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Italy and The Netherlands.
