Chartered Physiotherapy / Doctor of Physical Therapy

Dr Johnson McEvoy is a Chartered Physiotherapist / Physical Therapist whom specialises in musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction and sports injury. Johnson is an experienced clinicial physiotherapist and educator. He has and interest in muscle pain and dry needling and sports physiotherapy. He is head physiotherapist with the High Performance Irish Boxing Programme since 2003 and has worked through 2 Olympic cycles with boxing. His position is sponsored by the Irish Sports Council. He was an accredited physiotherapist for the Athens Olympics Games. He is a free lance educator and is an external guest lecturer to several university programmes.

Johnson is a member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and holds the Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from the University of St Augustine (2008). He graduated in 1993 from the four-year degree of Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from Trinity College (Dublin). He worked in the National Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Dun Laoghaire before emigrating to the United States in 1993 to work as a Physical Therapist having taken the Florida State Board Exams in March 1994. He worked extensively in Rehabilitation and gained experience in all areas of practice spending time between Florida and New York including assignments in Miami, Orlando, Tampa and New York City.

On returning to Ireland in summer 1997 he took up a post in Private Practice @ Barringtons Medical Centre Limerick and also Templemore and Thurles Physiotherapy Clinics where he gained experience working with the Garda Recruits of the national policing college.

He enrolled at University College Dublin in the Masters of Science (Sports Physiotherapy) in 1998 and successfully completed the required 2 year academic and examination requirements. He completed research in 2003, funded by German Company Medi-Strumph without prejudice. He graduated in Summer 2004 from the MSc (Sports Physiotherapy)

He established United Physiotherapy Clinic in 2000 in Castletroy in close proximity to the University Of Limerick. The clinic services include mainly patients with musculo-skeletal and orthopaedic conditions including Muscle Pain

He has participated in work with The National Coach and Training Centre including services to athletes and teams via the PACE scheme (see NCTC link). He has been involved in the Physiotherapy Screens with the NCTC study on Jockeys with the National Turf Club in 2004 / 2005. He has presented Recovery and Regeneration Strategies as part of a team talk under the Direction of Dr Giles Warrington - Exercise Physiologist of the NCTC. These were carried out for the NCTC 2005 - National Forum and for the Sports Council in the run up to Athens (Jan 2004 - Dublin)

He is Head Physiotherapist with Irish Amateur Boxing - High Performance Team since 2003 and has travelled extensively with the National team. He has worked with Irish Boxing since 2001. His work includes Physiotherapy Programme services co-ordination including screening, evaluation and treatment, education workshops and administration. The team utilises 4 to 5 regular Chartered Physiotherapists for delivery of services for training camps and travel abroad. A mini clinic has been established @ the National Boxing Stadium training facility for delivery of services

Johnson was an accredited Physiotherapist for the Irish Olympic Team in Athens 2004. He also coordinated the Cyprus Training Camps  pre Olympics Oct 2003 and July/Aug 2004.

He has a special interest in Myofascial Trigger Point Pain and Dysfunction with reference to the work of Dr Janet Travell MD and Dr David G Simons MD. He teaches foundation courses to Physiotherapists here in Ireland and has to date trained over 200 Physiotherapists in Trigger Point palpation. He has lectured on this topic on the MSc (Sports Physiotherapy) in University College Dublin.

He has facilitated and instructed in Dry Needling for Myofascial Trigger Points here in Ireland in 2006 and 2007 incorporating training to 59 Chartered Physiotherapists and one medical doctor with the David G Simons Academy of Switzerland with Christian Gröbli PT and Jan Dommerholt PT in 2006.

He had the unique and honoured privilege of visiting Dr David G Simons MD @ his Atlanta home in February 2004 for a 4 day mentorship where he gained valuable insight into the research and clinical applications of Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction.

In August 2006, had a two day mentorship with Dr Peter Baldry in the UK with fellow physiotherapists Christian Gröbli PT and Ricky Weissmann PT.

He has completed the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) with the University of St Augustine for Health Sciences in Florida which was founded by Dr Stanley Paris PT from the Institute of Physical Therapy, Georgia, USA in the 1960's.

Johnson is a member of the International Myopain Society and the International Association for the Study of Pain
